It has been a busy week. Kate had her assessment this week so we have been at the center every day this week! She is glad that the assessments are done. Tomorrow, they will go over the results and see how much she has gained these last 3 months.
We have been going to the park or somewhere every morning. Well today we didn't go anywhere and she was in a less happy mood and more repetitive. So, I think getting out in the morning is really critical for us.
I got some work done on my back and neck yesterday. There was a free coupon for an chiropractic adjustment and I used it. I really liked the clinic! They have lots of detox options and the doctor was really nice. Kate was disgusted by the looks of the foot bath that someone was doing. Brown, curdled water just grossed her out! I had to give her a healing while I was getting my treatment. It didn't work very well and she woke up in the night and asked me to clear the rest of it out. When she woke up in the morning she said she could think about the foot bath and not be grossed out. Anyway, the doctor said that I was in alignment but my muscles are super tight. So he worked on them for a while and I am so sore today. He asked where I hold my stress, HAHA, of course in my back and neck. So I need to attend to that a little better. I wonder what else we can be doing for Kate as well. I will take her for an appointment and see what they have to say.
On Saturday we will head home for a few days. So I may or may not update the blog when I am there. I am going to focus on relaxing and spending time with Matt and friends. But, I will try to give an update tomorrow about the assessment results before I leave.

Shopping!
Today after Brain Balance, Kate and I went shopping. She was in such a good mood!! She only has a few pairs of shorts and I thought maybe if she had some new pairs that she picked out, she would be fine with the switch to shorts instead of wearing fuzzy fleece pants. It has been in the 90s this week!!
So, we went to a few stores and I showed her some of the shorts that I thought were cute. Finally, she picked out a patchwork pair that she liked! She also picked out a blue pair of shorts and a fuzzy long sleeve shirt at Walmart. And the funny thing is that she wanted to shop some more. So we went into The Children's Place and she found some flip flops that she liked.
So usually when we go shopping she will say she likes something and then when we get home she won't try it on or wear it. Ever. But, today was different! She tried both shorts on and continued to wear the patchwork pair to do exercises!! Pretty cool. We will have to see if she wears them next week when it is hot again.

A Visual
Here is the new list of exercises we do each day. I wrote everything down so Kate could see how many we have to do and I can show her how many are left if she is having a hard time. I wrote down the times and which set of exercises we are doing. We also wrote down Kate's incentives that she can spend her stickers on. I think she likes being able to see everything and it seems helpful. And the cool thing is that she can read it all now, we don't need pictures!
Nature Walk
For fun this morning we went to the Nature Center and walked around. We walked quite far and got a little hot!!
Some ducks didn't want to move from the path. They were hanging out in the shade!
These cool pink flowers on this tree. I have never seen a tree like this before. We were looking at the flowers and a hummingbird came sipping nectar, but zoomed away before I could capture it.
Transfer Activities
Here are some activities that Kate works on in the morning. I challenge her by asking her to use her left hand, which stimulates the right brain. I love to see how she sorted the beads, especially.

Thrilling!
This morning we woke up early, ate breakfast, and did the 5 minute exercises. Kate got dressed (with a little grumbling) and we headed to the park. After she watched me go on this zip line thingy, she stepped right up and tried it herself. Without hesitation, she let it take her across and when it stopped in the middle she dropped down. She said it was a little scary but then did it 4 or 5 more times!!
She has been loving to race me. So we ran across the grass to the fence and back to the car to get water. It was probably 87 degrees by then and it was only 10:30! She continues to amaze me with how far she can run in a single burst now. And she is fast!
Then we went over to the swings. I gave her some underdogs, which she loved. I got on one of the swings and showed her how I could get myself going high by pumping. And for the first time EVER she tried it and was coordinated at putting her legs straight when they needed to be and bent when they needed to be. So, today she learned to pump!! She got herself going fairly high for her first time. I could tell it was tiring her out, but she kept going. She was trying to get REALLY high.
After the park, we stopped at the best whole foods store and she wanted a juice. So she told the woman what she wanted in her juice. Carrot, celery, apple (red, not green :), and I added cucumber. She watched the lady make it and as we were walking out to the car she told me how happy she was because I let her have a juice. She saw it as a treat!! How awesome. When we got home I asked her to drink some kefir with it to eat up the sugars, and she did (without a fuss!).
Fun morning!!
Her session went well today. She went right in easily. She earned a brain today for writing a great sentence. I am not sure exactly what that was about, but that's ok.
She had a big fit this afternoon after Costco about not staying long enough at the car wash (right by Costco) and that set us back on doing the exercises. It was good though, because right after the last set of exercises, she wanted to play. It was about 7 by then and I told her that she used her free play time to throw a fit so we didn't have time to play because it was bedtime. So, hopefully she starts to realize that 1)throwing a fit does not get her what she wants and 2) she misses out on some good play time because of the fit.
She has been talking lately about a kid who used to tease her a lot. She just can't understand why he teased her and was so mean. It is really hard to explain. I hope that she can learn how to let these things go and understand the things that people do. I think it will come. She said something like "His mom is so nice and loving so why does he do that?" She is really thinking deeply about things lately and in a more mature way.
But, she still likes fart jokes........

Peeee-U
ok, one last post:
Don't ever soak chickpeas too long before you sprout them. They stink up the whole place! Haha!!

Some little BIG things
Today, as she was heading into her session with her coach, Kate noticed Savannah come to the desk from the other room. Kate looked at her and said "Hi Savannah!" first, as Kate walked by her.
We were at the self checkout at Smith's and I forgot to grab a bag of ice. I asked Kate to go grab me one, it was about 25 feet away, but she could still see me. She went over to the freezer, looked around for a while, and then opened the door, grabbed a bag of ice and brought it to me. She had the funniest look on her face like "this is cold and heavy!".
At the park yesterday there was a two year old boy playing in the mud by Kate. She tolerated him playing there and was asking lots of "Why" questions about him. She was even ok when he put a clump of grass on her head and when he tackled her when she was sitting down and made her fall over. Whoo hooo!
At times, she has been staying calm when I am feeling irritated at something she has done. Sometimes she says things to calm me down!!
Even though it is hot, she has been asking me to snuggle with her at bedtime. Usually I will lay by her for a few songs and then go out. But she actually wants me to put my arms around her and snuggle. When I tell her it is time for me to go, she will grab onto my arm and wants me to stay and snuggle. Then she tells me I am too hot, lol. She still doesn't like kisses, but I kiss her anyway :)
For three days now, she has gotten dressed by herself. I have been letting her know that I was going to let her be responsible for this and she let me know she was NOT ready. Well, on Saturday I told her it was time and she was not happy at all. But, about 5 hours and several fits later, she dressed herself and we were off to the Expo looking at booths of jewelry, food, and other products. YAY. Yesterday she got dressed easily to go to see the eclipse. Today was not so easy, but 1 1/2 hours later she dressed and we went to the library. So the time is getting shorter! I am super proud of her for this because she was in major resistance over getting herself dressed, for the last few years!! So this is a big step for both of us ;)

36th Session
Today was Kate's last session!! Well, of the first block anyway. Number 36!! It is hard to believe I am sitting here typing this. It has gone a lot differently than I had expected. We have both learned so very much and we are not done yet!
So we are going to continue and then take a little break to go home for about a week. Kate is feeling very homesick (she would leave today) and it will be fun to see Matt and friends and gather some energy to finish out the next three months.
Sometimes I get discouraged because things are not going as happily as I want them to go. And then today it just hit me. Kate was doing the exercises and said to me "Mommy I will just take my time and do these because I am feeling tired. I will do the best I can." Wow! That really hit me. She didn't say that she wouldn't do them, just that she would do them a little slower. That is a major difference. She has really grown up these last few months and it is easy for me to forget.
The big difference is that before BB she would just plain refuse to do something and nothing I said or did would change her mind. Well, lately, she has been doing things she doesn't want to do. She will still grumble about it or say firmly that she is NOT going to do it, but then she does. I am really impressed with that.

Judgement
I was listening to a talk the other day and the woman was talking about judgement. She said if you were the only one on the earth then everything you did and said would be perfect. It is only other people's judgement or society's judgement that makes us think we are wrong or not good.
Just something to ponder.
Just something to ponder.
Eclipse
Yesterday we went to see the eclipse. It was really cool!! We looked at it through telescopes that the astronomers had set up. We saw the partial eclipse in the telescope and then went to the park. We ran around with bare feet and waited for the full eclipse. We were lucky because we are in the path of the U.S. that got to see the Ring of Fire. We saw online that you can see the eclipse by looking at the shadow of a tree and it is true! We saw hundreds of crescents on the ground and on the tree trunks. When the full eclipse was happening I was saying to Kate "Isn't this sooo coool!! Look at the tree trunk!" and she said "Yes! This is a message from the angels! They are saying Peace, Peace." Good to know!
We met a family who spoke Spanish and we were talking with the boy and he was translating for his parents. It was cool and it made me realize I need to brush up on my speaking skills. I couldn't remember many words but I have been practicing. Kate was funny because she said the only word she knows in Spanish is CHOCOLATE! Haha. a fun time. She is running super fast now and can run for quite a distance. She is almost as fast as me! I played soccer with the boy (Christian) and I am sore today. I was wondering why my body hurt today and then I realized I am not used to kicking the soccer ball around!! We stayed at the park pretty late and got to bed around 10! But it was fun.

Playground
We went to the splash pad/playground this afternoon. It was 101 degrees on the car thermometer. But the weird thing was that I didn't get too hot. The wind was blowing and that, and the water, was enough to keep us cool.
Kate did some really neat things. Usually she is quite timid at the playground, doesn't like to be up high, feels uncomfortable climbing and being unstable. Well, today, she tried a bunch of new elements. I wish I had pictures, I will try to add them another time.
A boy was there, probably about 6. He was showing her how to spin around on a circle that was 6 or so feet up in the air. He would grab onto it and hang down and spin around and back to the platform. Then he told Kate how to do it, which direction to go, and was really encouraging. She actually tried it!! And not once either. She tried it and kept doing it until she got the hang of it and felt comfortable. First time EVER!!! Then he told her to get on and when she was halfway around, he would get on and they both could cruise around together. So that is what happened. She grabbed on and swung around, he grabbed on and they both were swinging around. Kate was able to hold on the entire time until she got back to the platform. It was sooo fun to watch. After a while she got tired and would ask for help if she couldn't make it back to the platform. BUT, one time I told her she could just drop to the ground (about 2 feet below her) and she said "I know" and she DID!!! She is so much better at knowing where her body is in space and seems able to judge distances better.
She was climbing up elements that she hasn't climbed up before and didn't hesitate a bit to go down the slide. She even climbed across the spider web ropes.
It was really fun to see how she's changed. We haven't been to the playground in quite a while, so the differences were really noticeable.

New Schedule
Ok. Seriously, I have been pulling my hair out, getting frustrated, and getting a little mad at Kate, because we are having a hard time getting all the exercises in. I say we, because really this is a team effort. I tend to blame it on Kate, but I know that if I was miss happy sunshine like the coaches at Brain Balance then she would be more responsive to me. So, I take responsibility for my part in all this. Again, it would help me to read the book Happiness is a Choice by Barry Neil Kaufman. Good old Bears, he knows where it's at. And I just don't have it sometimes.
Soooooo, I needed a new strategy. I talked with Tammy(the director at BB) and she gave me some good ideas about how to encourage things to go a little smoother. Because (and I am reeeeaallly grateful for this) Kate is cooperating with everything the coaches ask her to do. So basically it is just me. Sucks to realize that. But it is how it is. So this is what I decided:
Get up, shower,eat breakfast.
Do 5-7 minutes of exercises (the 4 that Kate has to do 5 times a day + some core, extra credit)
GO SOMEWHERE FUN!! PARK, SPLASHPAD, ETC....
11ish Go home and eat lunch.
Noon-ish: 1st set of all primitives (about 20 min if done easily)
Play at home together or go to library, or do some shopping
3ish: 2nd set of all primitives
Reading, or something relaxing, or pool on these hot days
4:30- 2nd set of 5 minute exercises(4 primitives as above)
5ish- Dinner
6ish- 3rd set of primitives
It went great today!!! She was super cooperative, earned bonuses each time (if she starts within 5 minutes) and got ALL the exercises in. This is the first time she has done all 5 sets. YAY!! And her mood was really happy most of the day! The exercises really help her stay happy after she does them. Before??? well that is a different story sometimes.

DAN
Ok, here is what we found out at the DAN doc. Kate talked much of the time and answered most of his questions, it was kind of funny. So, I was really looking for some boosting of all that we have been doing. I wanted him to find any pieces that we are missing so we have it all going on at the same time.
BRAIN BALANCE + DIET+ SUPPLEMENTS+ENERGY WORK+LEAST-TOXIC ENVIRONMENT+CHIROPRACTIC+ ???
So, I am pleased with his recommendations, and even more pleased that our last Metametrix Triad Profile was all he needed to make recommendations. YAY! No new tests are needed. Here is what the plan is:
*He said it would be helpful to have a course of an antifungal to help kill some yeast. Then, the Yeastonil supplement and Body Ecology Diet will keep it from growing too much. He recommended two antifungals, which I have to decide which one will be best. One is homeopathic and one is prescription.
*Add folinic acid to make the B12 shots absorb and work better, he was happy that we were doing the shots already.
*Add zinc, there was a marker on the Triad that indicated the need for zinc.
*Add P5P. This is supposed to help with flexibility and lessen repetitive behaviors. Fingers crossed!
The great thing is that the follow up is in two months! So that will give us time to note any changes. I like that, instead of having to go back in a couple of weeks or so.

Progress Report #3
Program Director/ Coach Notes:
We are continuing to see progress in Kate! She has increased in levels in many of the areas since the last progress report. We are excited by her increase in Optokinetics. She also has improved greatly in proprioception. We are so proud of Kate for continuing to push herself in her core exercises. Her hard work has paid off! Her balance and cross crawls have also improved greatly. We are pleased with the changes we are seeing in Kate. She has become even more flexible and is happy to have multiple coaches working with her.
Cognitive Coach Notes:
Kate is fun to have in the cognitive room. She has made progress in her social skills. She comes in and is willing to work even if she is tired. She is doing really well in aal her reading comprehension. The cognitive coach rarely has to hep her with a word. She does ask questions when she has them. As she talks about her question, most of the time she figures is out herself. I would like to see her write more sentences. However, she does respond with at least one sentence on any topic she is given. She spells many words correctly; others she does phonetically-which is great because she is working independently. Kate's math skills are also improving. Other students talking does not distract her as much as it used to. Initially Kate talked "off the subject" a lot. Now when she has a story to tell, she asks if she can tell it when she is done with her assignments. She is also accepting of different cognitive coaches--which is huge for Kate.
Here are a few activities that she moved up levels:
Optokinetics: from level 6 to 7 (The optokinetic reflex is a combination of a saccade and smooth pursuit eye movements. It is seen as you follow a moving object with your eyes, which then moves out of the field of vision at which point your eye moves back to the position it was in when it first saw the object. wiki)
PRNG- from level 5 to 7, this is when she is on the tire swing and they spin her around, she is getting less dizzy and after they stop her, her eyes are coming to a stop quicker than they used to.
Supine Core- from level 3 to 6!! she can hold the bridge position longer now
Prone Core- from level 5 to 6 this is where she is laying on her stomach and lifts her arms and legs up
Lateral Core- level 4 to 5
Gait and Aerobics -from level 6 to 7 cross crawls
So she is really getting strong. She is getting closer to age level on all her core exercises. She is still at level 3 for small motor skills, so that is one area that we need to work on more. We also need to keep doing metronome to work on her timing. And still stand on left leg, but now the goal is 60 seconds instead of 30. I remember when it was hard for her to do it for 5 seconds!
So it was a great progress report! It got me motivated again. We have a new exercise routine, again. Some of the primitives we need to do at least 5 times a day to get them to integrate faster. So far she is too tired to do them 5 times. Her neck gets sore from doing the exercises so we have to do less of those. All in all, she is doing really well!

We are still here!
Wow, it has been a while since my last post. I will just do a quick recap and then try to keep up with our days better.
Last week was rough. I thought by now the exercises would go smoothly but most times they are time consuming. It really varies though. So we have just been doing primitives and trying to do those 3 times a day.
We went to Grandma and Grandpa's house this weekend. I was so grateful to be able to go to classes on Saturday and Sunday while Kate played with Grandma. It was a much needed break and I learned a ton!! It was fun to witness Kate joking around with Grandpa. It was a first!! She was actually laughing at his jokes and teasing him. So cool. I ate too many Newman O's and my stomach didn't like it, but it was tasty!
Yesterday was a rough day. Let's just say that I have always said that spanking doesn't work and Kate has an experience to prove that! I had some major making up to do today. Her price for forgiveness? Going through the car wash and a Zevia. I guess that is kind of like a dozen roses. We both learned a lot though.
So, today was a great day, considering. Got all exercises done, we are fed, and Kate is showering. Need a couple of days to get the house in order though. Then we are off again to Grandma's house. We finally got an appt with a DAN (defeat autism now!) doc that we have been waiting months for. Hopefully we can add some more good stuff to our healing routine.
Today was progress report day! I will do a separate post on that, but she went up in so many levels, especially core strength, so it's pretty great. She is not where she needs to be so we are planning to do another session. So we will be here another 3 months!
